He is dressed in the clothes of a poor country man; a blue waistcoat, red breeches, stockings falling around his knees, buckled shoes and a skin apron. Watching the man is a soldier, seated on the edge of the kitchen table, his arms folded, his mouth open. He wears a black tall hat, a red jacket with silver-white epaulettes and has three stripes on his sleeve. He also sports a blue cravat, a long red sash fastened round his waist at the side, and long white breeches. (This soldier could be a Royal Marine). Behind him, leaning forward on the table, is a woman in a white bonnet, brown short-sleeved blouse, shawl and dark skirt.
