The painting shows the tower of the parish church of St Mungo, which was established in the fourteenth century then enlarged and the tower was raised in 1680–1682. The mason was Tobias Bauchop, whose house, built in 1695, still stands in Kirkgate. Around 1700, John, 6th Earl of Mar, built a private aisle with burial vault on the north side of the church. The old kirk became overcrowded and was condemned in 1816: it was mostly demolished and many stones reused to build the new parish church in Bedford Place. The tower and west wall survived. The painting shows the tower without the fine weather vane which surmounted the roof originally and which was reinstated a few years ago. The old kirkyard contains an interesting and unusual collection of early trade gravestones and fine memorials for many of the people responsible for the development of Alloa into a busy industrial town.
