Cottage interiors, generally with women and children, were among de Hoog’s favourite subject matter. This painting, which shows two peasant children in a humble domestic setting, is executed in the rich earthen tones beloved by the artist. The work is in the style of Joseph Israels (1824–1911), one of the major artists of The Hague School, whose depictions of simple family life was a powerful influence on the genre painting of his successors.
