A monument, modelled on an upturned telescope, built to commemorate Admiral Lord Nelson. In 1852 a time ball, restored in 2009, was installed to drop at one o’clock for ships at sea to see. There are 143 steps leading to a viewing gallery on the monument, which has a castellated design. A pentagonal single storey structure with interior rooms surrounds a five-stage circular tower, divided by moulded bands and with windows, some of which are blind, with a narrowed sixth stage and a crenellated parapet. Above the panel commemorating Nelson is a sculpture of the stern of HMS 'San Josef'.
