In the beginning, MacWhirter was an energetic follower of Turner, and was long celebrated for his ability to produce the most magnificent pictures using a minimum of brush strokes. MacWhirter also published a number of books including 'The MacWhirter Sketchbook' (1906) and 'Landscape Painting in Watercolour' (1907).
