Frances and Mary Anne Pollock were the daughters of Joseph Pollock of Ballyedmond, near Rostrevor, and Frances Jones of Homra near Lisburn. Joseph Pollock was an important barrister in Newry and the extended Pollock family was both large and extremely influential in the linen business, mercantile trade, politics and law in late eighteenth-century Newry and Belfast. Frances Pollock is known to have married Major George Douglas of Mount Ida, County Down and to have died in Rome in 1843. Mary Anne Pollock was born in 1789 and married, as his second wife, William Clarke of Belfast, 1808. She was then 18 and he was 62 years old. Mary Anne died in 1873. This would have been a commissioned portrait in which one of the girls is depicted as painting a portrait of an unknown young man.
