Backhuysen is considered to have been part of the Dutch School but was born in Emden, Germany, where he first worked as a calligrapher. However, his interest in marine painting led him to move to Amsterdam where he seems to have been inspired by Willem van de Velde the Elder. This painting is very typical of his work, with blue-grey seas, majestic skies and dramatic light and shade. The 'Coronation' foundered off Rame Head in 1691 with the loss of Captain Skelton and 300 of the crew.
