Among the religious reformers portrayed in the painting are Martin Luther, on the left, and Philipp Melanchthon, on the right.

This work is one of two versions, the other being in the Guildhall Art Gallery, London, of a cropped picture on panel in the Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio of around 1543. The composition, with the figures looking to their left, suggests it was originally part of a larger ensemble, perhaps the wing of a triptych.
