This work is one of two versions, the other being in the Guildhall Art Gallery, London, of a cropped picture on panel in the Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio of around 1543. The composition, with the figures looking to their left, suggests it was originally part of a larger ensemble, perhaps the wing of a triptych.
