Now all harled and painted, the Castlestead and the building behind it mark the site of the earliest castle of Montrose. Whether William I or one of his predecessors built the castle, he certainly lived in it fairly regularly and signed no fewer than twenty Charters here. When Edward I of England, the Hammer of the Scots visited in 1296 to have twelve burgesses sign an oath of fealty on behalf of the town, he stayed in the castle for three nights. His chronicler refers to it as a chastel or stone building.
