Cézanne was a profound influence on Vlaminck from 1908. This composition of 1912–1913 probably derives from Cézanne's ‘Bridge over the Marne at Créteil’ (Pushkin Museum, Moscow) of 1893–1895. It was purchased by Gwendoline Davies from the Polish-born Parisian dealer Leopold Zborowski in 1919.
