The design emerged from the symbolism of the door, as the passage from one state to another; the door handle becomes the vessel of passage, containing the 'spirit of discovery' in Carrara marble. The vessel of passage must be grasped in order to open the door. The upper section of the doors contains the guardian eye, which has graced the prow of many thousands of boats since recorded history began. The lower section houses the 'cetaceous domain' where float the shapely organic life-forms, but also the rusting harpoon, a euphemism for the continued slaughter of whales.
