Born in Glasgow, John Quinton Pringle was an optician by trade and painted on a ‘part-time’ basis. He belonged to the group of painters known as the ‘Glasgow Boys’ who were a part of the Glasgow School of artists that flourished during the 1890–1910 period. This school of painters dedicated themselves to depicting the landscapes of Scotland, being influenced by the Impressionists. Pringle developed his own style of painting, using square brushstrokes and diluting the oil paint with turpentine so that the paint resembled watercolour.

This painting was purchased, as one of a pair, with 'Birch Trees, Ardersier' by Pringle.
