Taking inspiration from Japanese Zen gardens and the symbolism found in Buddhist sculpture and calligraphy Smith uses repeated mark making and dribbled paint lines to explore the tensions between freedom and control, negative and positive, stillness and movement.
The prints are made by painting onto acetate and then transferring the images on lithography plates using a photography process. This allows the artist to work in a loose, intuitive way that is very close to her painting technique.
