G. F. Watts returned to the theme of Love and Life repeatedly throughout his career, in different mediums. Constructed from two parts, this sculpture connects to depict the two allegorical figures together on a rocky outcrop. Love, represented by the male figure, physically supports the female figure of Life, tenderly guiding her through their clasped hands. This composition illustrates Watts’s belief that life’s challenges could only be faced when placing faith in love.
