This painting is the small oil study referred to on the back of another study of the jetty (ZBA1675), and is also inscribed by Sir Brinsley Ford, presumably at the same time in 1984. The inscription is 'Study for my picture Jetty at Greenwich [title underlined], 1938, by Jesse Dale Cast. Given me with a larger oil study by the artist's son, David Cast, 12 June 1984. It is my wish that these two oil studies, and the drawings done for the Jetty at Greenwich [underlined] should be kept together as they illustrate the immense trouble the artist took to perfect his paintings. [signed] Brinsley Ford'. Above the inscription is a modern paper label with a large red '2' inscribed on it in felt tip pen. Round this another hand has written in ink 'Jetty at Greenwich? Close view?' This study is for colour massing but shows some brick-red conti or similar crayon lines on the priming.
