The sculpture was commissioned as part of the centenary celebrations of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design. Describing the work, the artist writes: ‘The title “Strange Attractor” is a phrase lifted from the chaos theory (in physics) which was evolved in the 1990s; in short, it is a way of understanding non-linear behaviour such as turbulence in fluids or the shape of clouds. Also the superficial meaning can be applied to the sculpture, it is strange and attracts people to look at it. Currently it is needing the bearings in two of the moving elements replaced. I replaced them twelve years ago and it looks like they are worn-out again.’
