The artist was a close follower of his uncle Juan van der Hamen y Léon (1596–1631) who was a painter of still lifes to the Spanish Court. This fine example of his work almost deceives the eye in its realistic portrayal of the flowers and the glass vase through which light is being refracted on to the cloth. In its tightly handled technique and use of contrasting light and shade to produce a convincing illusion of three-dimensional space it owes much to the still life paintings of Caravaggio.
