This simple still life painting, clearly indebted to Cezanne, was painted when Gertler was just 21, the year after he had finished his four years at the Slade School of Art in London. There he was taught by Henry Tonks and Philip Wilson Steer and was a contemporary of some of the most important British painters of the period, such as Paul Nash, Edward Wadsworth, C. R. W. Nevinson and Stanley Spencer. Just three years later he was ‘to paint a picture in which I hope to express all the sorrow of life'; his masterpiece and savage indictment of war entitled 'Merry-go-Round', now in Tate.
