A clock-bearing bronze statue depicting ‘turn-of-the-century workers from three of the industries that have contributed most to Staveley’s development over the years – railways, mining, and steel. Each worker is identifiable by his dress and accessories: the railwayman by his peaked-cap, uniform and signalling flag; the miner by his safety lamp, shoulder bag, and trousers tied below the knee (to keep dust out); and the foundry man by his long leather apron, wooden soles, and ladle for sampling molten metal. The pedestal bears relief plaques contextualizing the workers’ ‘heroic deeds’ in scenes drawn from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: three of the plaques represent the same industries as the figures above, while two others represent the glory days of canal transport and market trade.
