Franz Müller-Gossen was born in Germany in 1871. He decided to settle in St Ives as a young man in 1890, studying under Stanhope Forbes and Julius Olsson. He became known for his seascape paintings, receiving commissions for naval paintings from Kaiser Wilhelm II. He was interned at the outbreak of the First World War but later repatriated because of ill health and after the war began to paint occasionally at St Ives again. He left Germany in 1929 in protest at the rising Nazi party and painted mainly in Britain, becoming accepted as a Royal Academician for the second time in 1938. He left Switzerland at the outbreak of the Second World War.
