This painting comes from later in the artist’s career, when he focused on more rural scenes which showed a gentler pace of life. The scene depicted is around midday as the sun is very strong casting dark, but short shadows. He had chosen an unusual viewpoint, painting the scene from above. He conveys the drudgery of washing through the repeated poses of the figures and the anonymity of their faces. This is similar in form to the images of the soldiers the artist depicted in the First World War.
