One of Dundee’s most prominent jute barons, Ogilvy Dalgleish studied at Edinburgh University before starting work at Baxter Brothers’ mills in 1854. Marrying Sir David Baxter’s niece no doubt helped his rise to the top, and he became chairman of the company after Baxter’s death in 1872. A notable philanthropist, he gave generous gifts to Dundee Royal Infirmary, University College and the Technical Institute, and was one of the principal benefactors to Dundee’s Medical School. He had a great interest in art, and left several fine paintings to the city’s permanent collection. A committee of leading citizens in Dundee commissioned Ouless to paint Dalgleish’s portrait to be presented to the city, and this replica was commissioned by the board of directors at Dundee Royal Infirmary to hang in their board room.
