Richard Douglas Powell (1842–1925) was a successful clinical and pathological physician. He studied medicine at University College, London, and became house physician there, working under Dr William Jenner. He later worked at Brompton Hospital, the Marylebone Dispensary, the Evelina Hospital for Sick Children and Charing Cross Hospital, before becoming physician at Middlesex Hospital. In 1887 Powell was appointed as physician-extraordinary to Queen Victoria, and later succeeded Dr Jenner as physician-in-ordinary. He held the same office under Edward VII and George V, and attended the last illnesses of both Victoria and Edward. Powell was a prominent figure in London medical societies.
