Menzies 'Ming' Campbell served as Leader of the Liberal Democrat Party from 2 March 2006 until 15 October 2007. He entered Parliament in 1987, when he won the seat for North East Fife. At Westminster he served primarily as a defence and foreign affairs spokesman, becoming Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in 1997. In 2004 he received a knighthood in recognition of his services to Parliament. Of his portrait Campbell commented; 'I appreciate very much to have been honoured by the House of Commons in this way. Both my wife and I are highly delighted with the portrait. It was a very great pleasure to sit for Victoria Crowe who made me feel relaxed and comfortable.'

Crowe studied at Kingston School of Art and the Royal College of Art, London, before joining Edinburgh College of Art in 1968, where she taught drawing and painting until 1998.
