Sir Joseph Whitworth was an English engineer, entrepreneur, inventor and philanthropist. In 1841, he devised the British Standard Whitworth system, which created an accepted standard for screw threads. He also created the Whitworth rifle, one of the earliest examples of a sniper rifle. On the base of the pedestal are three bas-relief medallions with inscriptions. They depict a bust of the deceased baronet, his wife and his most famous invention. Upon Whitworth's death in 1887, he bequeathed much of his fortune to the people of Manchester, with the Whitworth Art Gallery and Christie Hospital partly funded by Whitworth's money.
