Sir John Barbirolli (1899–1970) is seen here wearing concert dress, depicted from below, three-quarter length with his arms and head uplifted, holding a white baton. His left thumb, familiar in this position from many photographs, is noticeably extended. Sir John was a cellist as well as an eminent conductor and, as a boy, attended the Royal Academy of Music. From 1961–1969 he conducted and trained the Academy's First Orchestra , assisted by his colleague Maurice Handford, also a former student of the Academy.
