The sitter was a scholar of Wadham in 1892 and a Fellow of All Souls in 1896. He was Solicitor-General in 1910, Attorney-General in 1913; Home Secretary in 1915; Foreign Secretary from 1931 to 1935; Home Secretary from 1935 to 1937 and Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1937 to 1940. He was Lord Chancellor from 1940 to 1945 and was created Viscount in 1940.
