Alfred Baring Garrod (1819–1907) was an expert in gout and separated rheumatoid arthritis as a disease distinct from gout. He was a physician at University College and later at King’s College Hospital. In 1890 he was appointed physician-extraordinary to Queen Victoria.

The artist Hubert von Herkomer was a British painter of German descent.
