These gateways were placed at seven locations inside the Hamilton Square Quarter to promote the regeneration of central Birkenhead. Tall, elegant structures which are evocative of gateposts, sentry boxes and inscribed obelisks. The steel towers hold panels of western red cedar carved in low relief. The carved panels suggest a timeline showing the early maritime history of the area through its connection with the River Mersey's first ferry service operated by Benedictine monks from Birkenhead Priory. The higher images illustrate the ship building tradition, whereas the copper sun motif at the top of each panel according to the artist represents 'the dawn on a new age' for the area and makes a veiled reference to the approaching millennium celebration.
