Mumford was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) during his time with The Black Watch. The medal was instituted in 1854, during the Crimean War, to recognise gallantry within the other ranks. Mumford is depicted wearing four medals: the DCM, the Turkish Crimea Medal, the Crimean War Medal (1854, with bars: Alma, Balaklava and Sebastopol) and the Indian Munity Medal (1858, with bar: Lucknow).
