Roy Yorke Calne
1930–2024
Painter in all media whose works depicted transplant surgery, patients, nurses and medical colleagues “from the human point of view”. Calne was born in Richmond, Surrey, was a medical graduate of Guy’s Hospital, 1952; served as medical officer to a Gurkha Regiment in Hong Kong and Malaya, 1954–6; taught anatomy at Oxford University, 1957–8; trained in surgery at the Royal Free Hospital and started research on organ transplantation in 1959; lectured in surgery at St Mary’s and Westminster Hospitals, 1961–5; in 1965 taking up the appointment as professor of surgery at Cambridge University.
