In the top left-hand corner of the picture, in the background, is a cliff-top château with round towers; to the right and below it is a sheer cliff face that drops to the sea. In the foreground on the left are two women, a girl and another child, all dressed in traditional Normandy dress. The woman standing facing the girl is wearing a white lace bonnet with lappets and a red three-quarter length cloak over a dark dress. She carries a basket. The girl wears a dark bonnet and dress. Next to them sits a figure, possibly a boy, wearing a blue cap, and a light shirt. Next to the figures is a basket (or barrel?) lying on its side. Watching this group is a seated woman leaning on a tall basket. She is dressed in a white bonnet, a white blouse with the sleeves rolled up, a red and blue bodice, light coloured skirt and clogs.
