The work represents a knight's helmet in abstract form, intersected by lances and surrounded by longbows. The structure is mounted on four long pylons which taper into a round platform on which the main structure sits. The Shaw Theatre was originally built in 1971 as part of a complex owned by Camden Council. Saint Joan stood on Euston Road at the main entrance. When Camden Council sold the complex to a hotel chain in 2002, the sculpture was moved to the side and mounted on a new base.

Inscription description

east face, steel plaque with incised black letters: 'St Joan' by Keith Grant / This sculpture is inspired by George Bernard Shaw's play St. Joan / and was designed as the symbol of the Shaw Theatre. Its component / parts are the abstract forms of a knight's helmet and the long bows / and lances of medieval armies. The work commemorates events in Joan's / life but also the courage of subsequent women victims of oppression / and injustice / Goerge Bernard Shaw lived in St Pancras where he was a Vestryman / of the Parish. / The first version of St.Joah was commissioned by the London Borough of Camden in / 1971 and was situated on the Euston Road adjacent to the entrance of the former / St Pancras Library and Shaw Theatre. This version with a new base designed by the / artist was completed in 2002.
