Brock is shown in his elaborate Royal College of Surgeons robe. On the right is a model that is still in the collection at the Gordon Museum, Kings College. Brock was a leading British chest and heart surgeon and one of the pioneers of modern open-heart surgery. His achievements were recognised by a Knighthood in 1954, a Life Peerage in 1965, and a host of other awards. He entered Guy’s Medical School, with a scholarship, at the age of 17. As a medical student he is said to have shown 'the brilliance and force of character which were to mark his whole career'. He became a registrar and tutor at Guy's and a research fellow of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain. In 1935 he was appointed thoracic surgeon to London County Council and in 1936 he was appointed consultant surgeon to Guy's and Brompton Hospital.
This painting is a copy of the original now at Royal College of Surgeons (RCSSC/P 445) – presented by Guy's Hospital Department of Surgery, 1974
