Robert Willan (1757–1812) was an accomplished scholar, antiquary and a sound practical physician. He was the founder of English dermatology after he was the first in the country to clarify diseases of the skin in a clear and intelligible manner. Willan’s other medical works reflected another typically eighteenth-century concern: the effect of the environment upon health and disease.

This portrait is in the manner of the artist Lemuel Abbot and is often attributed to him.
