Fox was highly valued as a statesman by King Henry VII and King Henry VIII and was Keeper of the Privy Seal. He held the bishoprics of Exeter and Bath and Wells between 1487 and 1494. Between 1494 and 1528 he was Bishop of Durham and then Winchester. He retired from Court life in 1516 and devoted the rest of his life to prayer and meditation. Born at Grantham in Lincolnshire, Fox was blind for the last years of his life. He was an expert in stained glass and was associated with the glazing scheme at King's College Cambridge. He founded Bishop Foxe's School in Taunton in 1522, and founded Corpus Christi College in Oxford.
