Chalmers studied under Robert Scott Lauder, one of the original members of the Royal Scottish Academy. He concentrated largely on portraiture in his early career before focusing on landscapes latterly. A number of his landscapes are in the collection of the National Galleries in Edinburgh. He became a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1871 but tragically died in 1878 aged only 45. His own portrait, an etching by John Pettie, is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London.

This portrait is of an unknown sitter. Possibly not a formal sitting due to the posture and dress of the girl, it instead reflects a more romantic view of childhood as the girl leans on her hand and lets her book drop in reverie and daydream as the title suggests.
