Zuckerman was born in Cape Town, South Africa. He had a long association with the Zoological Society of London, commencing in 1928 as research anatomist. He was Secretary from 1955–1977 and President from 1977–1984. He is also remembered for being scientific advisor to the British government for 25 years, with exceptional knowledge on a wide range of issues. He published many scientific papers and several popular books including ‘The Social Life of Monkeys and Apes’ (1931) and ‘Scientists and War’ (1966). In 1970 Zuckerman was awarded the ZSL's Gold Medal in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the scientific development and general progress of the work at ZSL.
