Carol Graham, best known as a portraitist, studied at Belfast College of Art (1970–1975) and began exhibiting in Belfast in the latter year. One of the leading portrait painters in the north of Ireland, she received her first commission in 1975 and thereafter has painted several well-known figures, including Alun Francis (1981), James Galway (1988) and the President of the Republic of Ireland Mary Robinson (1993). In 1985 she was elected an academician of the RUA and in the same year was awarded the Academy’s golden medal, for her portrait of W. McNeill, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ulster. Mary McAleese was the eighth President of Ireland. Prior to becoming President she was a barrister, journalist and academic. McAleese was Ireland's second female president.
