Visits to Italy bought Gardner face-to-face with fifteenth-century Renaissance painting as well as the work of modernists such as Giorgio Morandi. However, after some 20 years of teaching serious illness forced her to leave the School in 1989. Following a second kidney transplant late in 1990, she has been able to concentrate with renewed vigour on her painting – portraiture and figure painting, interiors and still lifes.
