The sitter’s social status, as a member of the prosperous Antwerp middle classes, is indicated by her carefully depicted costume. She wears a conservative black silk gown with ruched sleeves, and a gilded brocade bodice with pointed tabs and a heavy mill-stone ruff. Her hair is adorned with a cap, which partially covers her ears with an ear-iron from which she would have hung her ear-rings. Her jewellery is tasteful and expensive and includes a gold pomander that hangs from a heavy chain around her waist, a square-cut diamond ring on her right forefinger and a pair of matching heavy gold bracelets prominently displayed on her wrists. The meticulous technique and decorative representation of the interior are typical of De Vos’s early style.
