At the time this study was painted, Poole Pottery was one of the most important potteries in the south of England, and was producing the wares of Carter Stabler & Adams.

The distinctive bottle kilns were a feature of the Poole Quay for many years, until they were demolished in 2002 to make way for a new development. The metal structure to the right is a gantry that carried coal to the Gas Works further up the Quay.
