Edward Bright (1721–1750), known as the 'fat man of Maldon', was a grocer weighing 302 kilograms. A local gambler was bet that 'seven hundred men' could fit inside Bright's waistcoat. He lost because seven men from the Dengie Hundred (a peninsula of land nearby) managed to squeeze inside the coat. In 2000, a bronze relief by Catharni Stern of the seven men inside the coat was put up at the King's Head Centre near Bright's home off Maldon High Street.
