Three elderly men on a quayside in the evening. On the right sits an elderly man with a white beard. He wears a dark hat, a gold sweater, light blue trousers and blue boots. He rests his hands on the top of his walking stick. Next to him on the bench is another bearded man, in a type of soft bowler hat, a blue shirt, an orange top and trousers – possibly oilskins – and blue boots. He leans back against the back of the bench. The two men face left, and are probably gazing out to sea. The third man wears a sou'wester hat and smokes a clay pipe. He wears a white jacket and dark trousers and boots, and has his legs crossed and arms folded; he watches his companions. Behind him is the mast of a boat. In the background is the coast and the sea with, on the left, small sailing boats in the distance.
