Painting of the New Hartley Pit Disaster which occurred on 16 January 1862. The Hester Pit was in the village of New Hartley, Northumberland. The pumping engine broke in half and fell down the shaft, blocking the only means of escape for the men and boys in the pit. In all, 204 men and boys perished. The painting shows the crowds waiting outside the pit, with very expressive features to their faces. The frame itself is highly decorated with pyrographic marks giving detail to the subject.
