Rotterdam-born Jacob Ochtervelt began his career painting landscapes; however, around 1660 he started to concentrate almost entirely on scenes depicting the life and leisure of the Dutch upper classes. These usually show elegantly dressed men and women reading and writing letters, eating and drinking, making music, and playing games. Working in this manner, Ochtervelt developed his own distinctive style and became one of the leading genre painters in Rotterdam in the second half of the seventeenth century.

This scene of an informal musical party is a relatively early work in this style. Ochtervelt has carefully observed the musicians, particularly the male singer on the right, who clutches his seat in concentration, his eyes popping as he attempts a difficult note.
