Mr and Mrs Campbell stroll arm in arm in the grounds of their estate of Kailzie at Traquair, Peebles-shire, and are captured as if the artist had just encountered them. Raeburn's lightness of touch is seen here in the boldly sketched landscape setting. Raeburn was also admired for his use of reflected light. The couple in this picture are romantically swathed in the glow of sunlight.

Raeburn was the most famous Scottish portrait painter of his day, and painted many of Scotland's important people, such as politicians, judges and landowners. His talent lay in his ability to catch character with just a few strokes of paint.
