inscribed front: TO THE MEMORY OF / JOHN RHODES OF HALIFAX, MERCHANT. / WHO ADORNED SOCIETY BY HIS UNASSUMING VIRTUES / AND HAVING FULFILLED THE VARIOUS DUTIES OF THIS LIFE OF TRIAL, / AS A CHRSTIAN IN WHOM THERE WAS NO GUILE, / WAS REMOVED BY A SUDDEN DEATH FROM HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS / ON THE 21ST OF JANUARY 1818 AGED 59 YEARS / "THE MEMORY OF THE JUST IS BLESSED"
