Unveiled by HRH the Prince of Wales, the group sculpture features two groups of symbolic islanders, including a child, plus a liberator dressed in fatigues, all billowing the Union flag, with the whole group creating a victory arch for people to walk through. The surrounding circular pool represents the island, whilst 12 fountains represent the 12 parishes. The sculpture was commissioned to celebrate and commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Liberation of the island on 9th May 1945, from the German occupation that lasted five years.
