This is a coloured version of a black-and-white photograph called 'Pals' taken by Donald Ottey, AIBP, for the National Coal Board in 1959.

The location shown is Whitwick Colliery near Coalville, Leicestershire. The figure in the photo has the same stance but the artist has portrayed his face differently and it is not a good likeness of the original miner, who was an 18 year old called Mick Gold. The horse was called Neil.
